About Richtersveld Hike

This is a remote, guided journey through the northern Richtersveld, following the Orange River before moving into red granite country, wide kloofs and quiver-tree landscapes. It is a supported tented hike: the group carries day packs while the operator moves camp equipment between overnight stops.

The character of the hike changes markedly from river-side jeep track to rugged, off-road mountain walking. It is best suited to fit, self-reliant hikers who are comfortable in an exposed desert environment and happy to camp simply.

Hike directions

The group meets at De Hoop, where vehicles remain for the route. The first night is spent beside the Orange River.

The first walking day follows the river for roughly 12 km before turning south and gaining about 300 m over the remaining 9 km to a bush camp near the Tattasberg viewpoint. The route passes an old diamond-prospecting trench and reaches a granite-boulder campsite with broad views.

The following day is shorter in distance but slower underfoot. The route crosses boulders and an open kloof, with an optional high point on Tattasberg where conditions permit, before descending through quiver-tree country to Kokerboomkloof. Allow a full day for the 12 km stage.

Day four continues through a largely trackless kloof before joining jeep track to Richtersberg Camp. The direct return to De Hoop is about 10 km, while the longer option explores the Abiekwa river section before returning to the Orange River and following it back to camp. The final morning is for departure.

What to expect

Expect a very dry, open landscape with strong sun, temperature swings and little shade. The itinerary includes a mix of jeep tracks, river corridors, loose rock and boulder scrambling; water crossings and slippery surfaces may be encountered after rain or in riverbed sections.

Bring suitable trail footwear, sun protection, warm layers for evening, a headlamp, personal eating gear, adequate drinking water capacity and your own tent and bedding. Confirm the current packing list, water arrangements, route variation and safety requirements with the operator before booking.

Camps

The route starts and ends at De Hoop beside the Orange River. Intermediate camps are simple, with the group’s tents and shared equipment transported ahead. Facilities vary by camp: the source notes basic washing arrangements at bush camps and more conventional toilets and cold showers at some established stops.

About the area

The Richtersveld is renowned for dramatic granite outcrops, desert-adapted plants and vast mountain-and-river views. Its apparent openness should not be mistaken for easy terrain: navigation, heat management and group discipline matter here. This is a guided itinerary inside a sensitive protected landscape, so stay with the group, leave no trace and follow all park and guide instructions.
