Andover Nature Reserve

Andover Nature Reserve

Andover Nature Reserve is a lovely nature reserve located in the Limpopo Province of South Africa, quite close to the Kruger National Park's Orpen Gate. It's a great option for those seeking a more secluded and intimate bushveld experience, especially since it shares unfenced borders with both Kruger and Manyeleti Nature Reserve.

Key Features

  • Proximity to Kruger: Its location near the Orpen Gate of Kruger National Park means that animals can move freely between the reserves, increasing the diversity of wildlife you might see.
  • Unspoiled Wilderness: Andover is considered a "truly wild" and undeveloped area, offering an authentic bushveld experience.
  • Variety of Game: You can expect to see a variety of plains game, including zebra, giraffe, kudu, bushbuck, and other smaller antelope. Rhino and buffalo are also present, and lions occasionally visit from the neighboring Sandringham Private Nature Reserve. Leopards are also known to reside in the reserve.
  • Birdlife: With its diverse habitats, Andover attracts a rich array of birdlife, making it a pleasant destination for birdwatchers.
  • Limited Accommodation: The reserve has a limited number of self-catering rondavels and a caravan park, ensuring a more private and tranquil experience.

Why Visit?

  • Authentic Bushveld Experience: If you're looking for a less crowded and more intimate safari experience, Andover is a great choice.
  • Potential for Wildlife Encounters: While not as densely populated as Kruger, Andover still offers good opportunities for wildlife sightings, and the possibility of seeing "Big Five" animals adds to the excitement.
  • Tranquility: The limited number of visitors ensures a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere.
  • Convenient Location: Its proximity to Kruger makes it a good option for those wanting to combine a visit to both reserves.

Things to do

  • Game Drives (Self-Drive): Explore the reserve in your own vehicle, looking for wildlife.
  • Guided Walks: Ranger-accompanied bush walks can be arranged on arrival, offering a more immersive experience.
  • Birdwatching: Bring your binoculars and spot the diverse bird species.
  • Relaxation: Enjoy the peace and quiet of the bushveld at your accommodation.

Important Considerations

  • Self-Catering: Accommodation is self-catering, so it's essential to come prepared with your own food and supplies. There are no shops in the immediate vicinity.
  • Limited Facilities: Andover is a more rustic reserve, so facilities may be limited.
  • Booking: It's advisable to book your accommodation in advance, as the reserve has a limited capacity.

Andover Nature Reserve is a good choice for those seeking a more secluded and authentic bushveld experience. Its proximity to Kruger and Manyeleti, combined with its diverse wildlife and tranquil atmosphere, makes it a worthwhile destination for a relaxing getaway. While it may not offer the same level of facilities or wildlife density as larger parks, its unique charm and potential for close encounters with nature make it a special place to visit.
