Grietjie Private Nature Reserve occupies about 2,800 hectares in the northern section of Balule Nature Reserve, south of Phalaborwa. Its six kilometres of perennial Olifants River frontage, rocky outcrops, open plains and riverine bush make it a particularly varied corner of the Greater Kruger landscape rather than simply another lodge address.
What Open Boundaries Mean
Grietjie forms part of Balule, within the Greater Kruger landscape and the Kruger to Canyons Biosphere. The removal of the old Kruger boundary fence has allowed wildlife to move through the wider area. That is ecologically meaningful, but it also means visitors must respect a genuine Big Five environment: a rental property, track or riverbank is never permission to walk independently.
River, Rock and Bushveld
The Olifants River is the reserve’s most important natural feature. Its water and riverine vegetation contrast with the dry Lowveld bush and plains, creating places for birds, insects, mammals and people to pause. Keep a sensible distance from the bank, do not feed wildlife or leave food outside, and follow the rules of the lodge or property you are using.
Big Five, and the Less Obvious Animals

Tracks, small mammals, reptiles, insects and the changing birdlife are part of the same system. Wildlife is never guaranteed; a quiet, patient drive with a knowledgeable guide is more rewarding and safer than pressuring a sighting.
A Strong Birding Reason to Slow Down
More than 280 bird species have been recorded in the varied habitats, including the elusive Pel’s fishing owl. That does not make the owl a guaranteed tick, especially as riverine birds are easily disturbed. Carry binoculars, stay quiet at water and let a guide or host advise on any ethical viewing opportunities rather than playing calls or entering sensitive areas.
Stay, Drive and Explore on the Correct Terms
Grietjie has private homes and lodges, each with its own access rules and activity programme. Book game drives, guided walks and transfers through the establishment or reserve authority that hosts you. An independently hired vehicle should remain on authorised roads, comply with gate arrangements and never be used to follow animals off-road.
Safety is Part of the Wilderness Experience
After dark, walk only where an authorised host says it is safe. Keep children close, use a torch around accommodation, store food securely and listen to ranger instructions. River levels, wildlife movements, heat and seasonal storms can all change the character of a stay, even when the lodge surroundings appear calm.
