Pongola Game Reserve
Pongola Game Reserve lies beside Pongolapoort Dam, also known as Lake Jozini, beneath the Lebombo Mountains in northern KwaZulu-Natal. Proclaimed in 1894, it is widely regarded as Africa's first formally proclaimed game reserve. Today its bushveld, riverine thickets and big freshwater lake offer an unusual combination of wildlife safari, birding, boating and tiger fishing—provided visitors respect the separate safety and permit requirements of land and water.
A Reserve with Conservation History
Pongola's 1894 proclamation predates the better-known Hluhluwe-iMfolozi and Kruger reserves, making it an important chapter in South African conservation history. Lake Jozini Changes the Experience

More than 350 bird species have been recorded in the broader reserve landscape. A sighting is never assured, but the mix of acacia bushveld, river vegetation and open lake creates rewarding observation. Stay in the vehicle on self-drive routes unless in a designated safe area.
Tiger Fishing with Rules
Lake Jozini is renowned for tiger fishing. Fishing requires current local knowledge: permits, bag limits, tackle practices, seasons and launch arrangements should be verified before travel. Keep line, hooks and food waste secure, release or retain fish only within the rules, and treat other users of the lake—especially wildlife observers and local fishers—with courtesy.

Game drives, boat trips, fishing and accommodation vary by operator and current availability. Do not assume facilities are fenced, nor that a lodge activity is a public service.
