iSimangaliso Wetland Park is South Africa's first World Heritage Site, inscribed in 1999 for an extraordinary natural landscape that combines coast, coral reefs, lakes, estuaries, wetlands, sand forest, savanna and marine waters. At about 1.33 million hectares of land and sea, it is not one reserve with one entrance; it is a vast connected park made up of distinct sections, each with its own gate, access route, safety considerations and visitor experience.
