Northern Farm Nature Reserve
Dedicated Trail Running, Hiking and Mountain Biking near Fourways
Northern Farm is a managed outdoor trail destination close to Fourways, Johannesburg, within the Diepsloot Nature Reserve landscape. It is known for a large network of purpose-built mountain-bike routes and separate trail-running or hiking routes across open grassland. What makes it more than an exercise venue is the scale of the landscape, the number of dams and water crossings, and the way a volunteer user group combines trail maintenance with conservation, anti-poaching and community training.
A Green Lung on Johannesburg’s Edge
Northern Farm is often described as a green lung for Johannesburg. The wider farm contains grassland, watercourses and numerous dams, and is home to a substantial bird list that includes conservation-sensitive species such as Blue Crane and Grass Owl. The Jukskei River system also runs through the broader landscape. This context matters when using the trails: the farm is not simply a private sports circuit, and its rules on staying on marked tracks, not littering and giving wildlife right of way are part of protecting habitat alongside recreation.
Dedicated Routes Reduce Conflict
The orange hiking and trail-running routes are 7.5 km and 11.5 km, deliberately built so that cyclists do not use their single-track sections. Cyclists have separate routes from 8 km to 65 km, with longer trail networks and technical options. This separation is one of Northern Farm’s real strengths: hikers and runners should follow the orange route rather than entering bicycle singletrack, while riders must respect direction signs, farm vehicles and people on shared jeep tracks. The distance may look straightforward on paper, but summer heat, muddy crossings and open exposure can make a route feel longer.
More than a Weekend Ride
The recreation operation is supported by volunteers and links conservation with practical community development. Its Impilo Project has trained people in areas including bicycle mechanics, hospitality, shop management and conservation work, while ranger and river-clean-up initiatives help address snaring, litter and damage after floods. Knowing this adds value to an entry fee: users are contributing to a place that is maintained for both people and the species living there.
Plan Your Route and Your Day
Northern Farm is generally open on weekends and public holidays, with seasonal hours and entry arrangements published by the operator. A clubhouse offers coffee and bike-service facilities, but confirm current trading arrangements before travelling. Start early, carry enough water and tell someone your planned route. The farm’s emergency process uses contact numbers displayed on signs, so take note of your route name and nearest marker if help is needed.
Rules that Keep It Enjoyable
No dogs or pets are allowed. Stay on established tracks, obey no-entry signs, never ride singletrack in the wrong direction and give animals and farm vehicles right of way. Cyclists must comply with the helmet and number-board rules; hikers and runners should use the dedicated orange routes and remain alert at all shared-road crossings. Do not drink from dams or the river, do not swim without explicit permission and take all litter home. These are small habits that help the farm remain a genuinely enjoyable and safe outdoor space close to the city.
