Krugersdorp Game Reserve
A Municipal Game Reserve with a Long Conservation Story
Krugersdorp Game Reserve is a Mogale City wildlife destination on Johannesburg’s West Rand. The conservation area was established in 1963 after Harmony Gold Mines donated the land to the former Krugersdorp Municipality on condition that it be kept as a nature reserve in perpetuity. That origin still matters: this is not simply an entertainment venue, but a protected municipal landscape where wetlands, waterfalls and deeply cut valleys sit alongside visitor roads and developed facilities.
A Reserve of Valleys, Wetlands and Wildlife
The terrain makes the reserve more varied than the broad grassland people often expect close to the city. Watercourses and wetland patches draw birds and smaller animals, while the valleys and rocky ground create shelter, viewpoints and changing vegetation. There is also a fenced lion sanctuary of about 100 hectares within the wider reserve. Give animals space, keep noise low and remain in the vehicle unless staff direct you to a designated visitor area; a wildlife sighting is most rewarding when it is not turned into a close encounter.
Game Viewing by Day and after Dark
Krugersdorp Game Reserve is best planned as a day-entry, self-drive or guided-game-drive experience rather than an unsupervised outdoor ramble. Mogale City’s tariff schedule distinguishes ordinary reserve entry from two-hour guided day and night drives. A night drive can reveal a different side of the reserve, but it also needs more planning: confirm that it is operating, whether a booking is required, the meeting point, the minimum age if applicable and what clothing or weather protection to bring. Never assume a gate ticket includes a guided activity.
Stay Longer or Meet as a Group
The municipality lists chalets, rondavels, camping and caravan facilities, as well as venue hire. These options make the reserve useful for a family weekend, school outing, small function or group gathering, but they are separate products with their own availability and conditions. Book accommodation or a venue ahead of time, ask what is included and clarify whether day-entry, game drives, vehicle access and any other activity are charged separately. A confirmed reservation is more useful than arriving with an old tariff screenshot or an assumed package.
Walking, Cycling and 4x4 Activity
Older West Rand planning material records 4x4, running and mountain-biking activity at the reserve, but this should not be read as a promise that every route is currently open to every visitor. SA Hikes does not list Krugersdorp Game Reserve as a confirmed public hiking trail destination because a current, marked walking route and its access conditions are not published clearly enough. Ask the reserve directly if a walking, running or cycling route is available on the date you intend to visit, where it starts and whether it is suitable for your group. Do not leave a vehicle in a wildlife area unless the operator specifically directs you to a safe zone.
Plan a Better Visit
For an easy day, arrive with water, sun protection, binoculars and enough time to drive slowly rather than rushing between sightings. For an overnight stay, confirm check-in arrangements, bedding or self-catering equipment, the state of the access roads and any load-shedding arrangements. In summer, a light rain jacket can be as useful as sunscreen; in winter, early mornings and evening drives can be cold. Above all, use the municipality’s current contact and tariff information before travelling, because prices, activities, maintenance closures and booking procedures can change.
