About Hennops Krokodilberg Trail

The Krokodilberg Trail is the most demanding of the three Hennops hiking routes. At 10 km with approximately 400 m cumulative ascent, it is a proper half-day hike with repeated climbing, rocky terrain, viewpoints and river crossings.

Hike Directions

Start at Hadeda Camp after registering and collecting the current trail map.

The route crosses the Hennops River using the suspension bridge and cable car before climbing into the surrounding hills. Points of interest include Pruimpie se Gat, viewpoints, old stone structures, dolomite mines, the lime kiln and dassie caves.

The operator does not recommend the trail for children under 12 or for unfit hikers. Carry sufficient water: Hennops recommends approximately one litre per person for every two hours of hiking.

Strong footwear and sun protection are important, particularly on hot Gauteng days.

About the area

Hennops lies in the river valley between Johannesburg, Pretoria and Hartbeespoort. Indigenous riverine trees, rocky gorges and plateau country create good habitat for birds and other wildlife. The wider trail system also contains traces of old settlements, dolomite mining and historic lime-burning activity.
