Ezemvelo Nature Reserve

A Wildlife Reserve with Three Self-Guided Hiking Trails

Ezemvelo Nature Reserve offers a bushveld hiking experience east of Pretoria, where trails move through grassland, koppies and rocky terrain in a reserve shared with free-roaming game. It is a good choice for people who want a proper half-day or full-day walk with wildlife, rather than a short urban park circuit. The setting is part of the experience: hikers may see animals from closer range than they would from a vehicle, so the reserve needs to be treated as real bushveld, not as an unfenced public garden.

Choose the Trail for Your Time and Fitness

The easy Ochna Trail covers about 5 km through grassland and a small koppie, normally taking 1 to 1½ hours. It is the sensible option for families, newer hikers or anyone who wants time for birding and wildlife viewing. The Protea Trail is 14.6 km and takes about 3½ hours; it includes grassland, rocky ground and a steep descent from a koppie where loose rock deserves care. The Burkea Trail is a 21 km, six-to-seven-hour route and is the reserve’s serious all-day option. Its northern koppie section can be tricky, so it suits fit hikers who are comfortable navigating uneven terrain.

Start Early and Leave a Margin

Ezemvelo publishes latest starts of 15:00 for Ochna, 13:00 for Protea and 11:00 for Burkea. Those times are a useful safety boundary, not a target to push: start earlier if the group is slow, the forecast is hot, children are joining or you intend to stop frequently for photographs and wildlife. Do not begin a long route late in the day on the assumption that the distance alone tells the whole story.

What to Take on the Trail

Wear comfortable shoes with grip and carry more water than you would for a suburban walk. Ezemvelo recommends water and binoculars, with a hat and sunscreen in summer and a rain jacket or poncho in winter. Add a charged phone, basic first-aid supplies and food for the longer routes. Weather can turn a straightforward grassland walk into an exposed, tiring outing, while rocky sections require attention even when the route is generally rated easy.

Respect Wildlife and the Reserve

Stay on the designated trail, keep the group together where practical and give animals generous space. Never approach, feed or try to get a closer photograph of wildlife. Keep noise low, take all litter out and turn back if weather, fitness or conditions make the planned route unsuitable. This is the kind of reserve where a conservative decision is part of a good day out.

Bookings and Overnight Planning

Use Ezemvelo’s official booking route to confirm entry, hiking, accommodation and current operating arrangements before travelling. Overnight options can make the reserve a more relaxed weekend visit, but a longer trail should still be planned around daylight, weather and the group’s fitness rather than treated as a casual late-afternoon outing.
