Abe Bailey Nature Reserve

Abe Bailey Nature Reserve near Carletonville and Khutsong is a large grassland-and-wetland reserve named after mining pioneer Abe Bailey, whose old hunting lodge now serves as the reserve office. It is most valuable as a quiet birding and nature destination, with woodland patches, wetlands and open Highveld habitat rather than a branded long-distance hiking product. Its 4 200 hectares offer the room and habitat variety that good birding needs in a part of Gauteng better known for mining and industry.
