Riet River Water in a Small Karoo-Edge Reserve
Kalkfontein Dam Nature Reserve is a small 260-hectare Free State reserve north of Fauresmith, set around the much larger Kalkfontein Dam on the Riet River. It is a self-reliant destination for anglers, waterbirds, quiet camping and a simple experience of dry grassveld, Karoo shrubs, ridges and open water.
Small Land Area, Large Water Body
The contrast between the compact reserve and the 4,500-hectare dam is central to Kalkfontein. Wild olive and karee grow along ridges while grass and Karoo bushes cover the open veld. Mountain reedbuck, steenbok and Burchell’s zebra may be seen, but the sense of space, sunsets and water is often the main reason to visit.
Angling and Birding
Yellowfish, mudfish, carp and barbel draw anglers, while waterfowl, raptors and fish eagles give birders a reason to spend time at the shore. The wider district also notes flamingos and other waterbirds. Observe from a respectful distance, avoid disturbing shoreline habitat and check fishing, launch and water-use rules before travel.
Camping without a Shop
The reserve lists shoreline camping, an ablution facility, a group lapa and slipways, but no power at campsites and no shop. Bring drinking water, food, firewood, lighting, warm bedding and a complete camping kit. A small reserve rewards the visitor who is prepared and does not expect a resort service level.
Water Activities Need Conditions
DESTEA lists aquatic sport and boating, but the appropriate activity depends on weather, water level, permits, safety requirements and current facility access. High wind can change the dam quickly. Wear a lifejacket, stay aware of changing conditions and keep any craft to authorised launch areas.
Walking in the Reserve
Visitors are welcome to walk in the reserve and there are six kilometres of tourist roads for game viewing. Use routes staff confirm as open, keep clear of shoreline erosion and do not mistake a management track for an unrestricted hiking route. Summer heat and storms, and cold winter nights, are part of the planning.
