Commando Drift Nature Reserve

Commando Drift Nature Reserve is a 6,000-hectare Eastern Cape provincial reserve centred on Commando Drift Dam, roughly 60 kilometres from Cradock on the Tarkastad road. In a landscape better known for dry horizons, the dam is a powerful change of scene: open water, bays and waterbirds set below dolerite and sandstone cliffs, with the big sky and changing temperatures of the Karoo all around. It is a reserve where an overnight stay adds real value, because early light, a slow drive and an unhurried walk reveal more than a hurried day trip.
